Rakomelo

Product

Recipe-Ingrediants

Rakomelo is an alcoholic beverage made by combining honey, tsikoudia (a Cretan spirit), and spices. It has been loved by all of us. We primarily enjoy it as a hot drink during the winter. We cannot provide an exact recipe for rakomelo because each person adds honey and spices according to their taste. Honey is a key ingredient, and its sweetness varies, so the amount used can be adjusted. Different types of honey, such as flower honey, thyme honey, pine honey, chestnut honey, sunflower honey, acacia honey, bitter orange honey, etc., have different flavors and sweetness levels. In the past, grandmothers used to give it as a remedy for coughs, as it opens the airways, improves coughing, and soothes a sore throat.

Our ingredients:

  • 10 shots of tsikoudia
  • 6 tbsp of honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick or a pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp of cloves

Directions

We pour the ingredients into a small pot and stir until it reaches the first boil.

  • We can experiment with other spices like cardamom, nutmeg, mace, star anise, as well as other ingredients like ginger, orange zest, lime, grapefruit, etc.
  • Your rakomelo may turn slightly cloudy. This is due to the honey.
